Sophia J. Bass

Film and concert composer whose ethnomusicology background enables her to reflect the sonic wealth of the world in her music.

Sophia J. Bass is an American composer, conductor, and ethnomusicologist recognized for her bold, cross-genre approach to film scoring and contemporary chamber music. A native of Virginia, Bass demonstrated exceptional musical instincts as a child, composing award-winning piano pieces by age six and having an original work orchestrated by the McLean Symphony Orchestra by age eleven. Her early versatility extended into guitar, pop-art song, and jazz before she formally focused her academic and professional path on composition and conducting. At Oberlin College and Conservatory, where she earned her degree in ethnomusicology for composition in 2020, Bass pioneered a landmark recording project by recruiting and conducting a 45-piece live orchestra to record her 22-minute score for the film Thicker Than Water, establishing her signature blend of cinematic storytelling and orchestral leadership. Mentored by Hollywood film composers Roger Neill and Larry Groupé, she has continuously expanded her artistic horizons, earning a prestigious Fulbright-Nehru grant to study Hindustani classical music and tabla under Pt. Udayaraj Karpur, as well as completing her Master of Music in Composition for Screen at the Royal College of Music in London. Her catalog bridges diverse acoustic landscapes, featuring prominent commissions such as Taal-Naad Naman for cellist Inbal Segev's 20 for 2020 project, a solo double bass work incorporating Raag Des for the Bass Players for Black Composers organization, and scores for various independent films and opera projects. Grounded in a commitment to global musical traditions, gender inclusion, and cultural representation, Bass approaches composition as a vehicle for deep emotional connection, combining rigorous classical orchestration with rich world-music influences.
